About 9 Horses

Joe Brent, mandolin

Sara Caswell, violin and hardanger d’amore

Andrew Ryan, bass

9 Horses is an improvising chamber ensemble featuring Joe Brent (formerly of Regina Spektor’s band) on acoustic and electric mandolin, 2018 GRAMMY nominee Sara Caswell (Esperanza Spalding) on violin and Hardanger d’amore, and Andrew Ryan (Kaia Kater) on bass. Featuring Brent’s original compositions and the incendiary, genre-hopping virtuosity of all three members, the trio at the core of 9 Horses represents Brent’s dual vision of a musical future with no barrier between the old notions of ‘folk art’ and ‘fine art’, and an ensemble capable of communicating this idea through musical canvases both great and small. Winners of the 21CM: LAUNCH Emerging Artists Award and clinicians and ensemble-in-residence at universities such as Baldwin Wallace Conservatory, Ball State, and UTEP, 9 Horses is celebrating both the city’s return to live music and the release of their newest album Omegah (2021 Adhyâropa Records) with this concert at ShapeShifter Lab.

About Endless Field

Jesse Lewis, guitar

Ike Sturm, bass

“Really beautiful from deep ambient to ambient Americana…intense but contemplative intuitive interplay. Pastoral acoustic bliss.” (Echoes/NPR)

Endless Field (Biophilia Records Artists) is a collaborative instrumental guitar and bass duo featuring guitarist Jesse Lewis and bassist Ike Sturm. They play original songs filled with intricate finger-style lines, improvisation and ambient textures. Drawing on inspiration from nature, the duo seeks to bring music to outdoor spaces, encouraging audiences to explore their own frontiers.

Endless Field has toured internationally in Italy, Norway and across the U.S., performing at Lincoln Center, the U.N., SubCulture and live on NPR’s Echoes Radio. Volunteer activities have involved Riverkeeper sweeps, Habitat for Humanity, university residencies and river cleanup projects. They have collaborated with jazz luminaries such as Theo Bleckmann, Ingrid Jensen and Donny McCaslin. Endless Field produces an annual benefit concert in New York City for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) called “LIVING EARTH”, which has featured world-class ensembles led by Catherine Russell, Dave Douglas, Camila Meza and Fabian Almazan.

Endless Field released their new album ‘Alive in the Wilderness’ in the summer of 2020 on Biophilia Records. The album was recorded live in the Utah wilderness using a solar battery-powered mobile recording studio.  National Geographic photographers and videographers documented their epic adventure and all album proceeds are being donated to the Natural Resources Defense Council.
