Rin Seo is a New York-based composer whose works range from modern improvised music to cross-breeding classical. Since she was exposed to a diverse musical environment, her music combines eclectic musical idioms and blurs musical boundaries with her own musical color.
Seo grew up in Seoul, South Korea. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Classical Composition from the Sookmyung Women’s University. After being awarded a scholarship from the Berklee College of Music, she moved to the United States and received a Professional Diploma from the school. Her original composition was featured by the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra in 2018. Seo recently received a Master of Music in Jazz Composition from the Manhattan School of Music. She studied with Jim McNeely, a Grammy award-winning jazz composer. As one of the finalists, her original composition was performed by Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra in 2019. Seo is a recipient of 2019 BMI Booker Scholarship for young jazz artists. She won the 2020 ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award and her original composition, “Jazz suite” was recognized as an outstanding composition from the DownBeat magazine Student Music Award.
